Professional Background

I’m Dr. Jia Mao, MD, the founder of Desiderata Integrative Psychiatry, Inc. I'm a psychiatrist with more than 11 years of experience in clinical practice. I completed my medical training at UCLA and my Psychiatry Residency at the UCLA - Kern Medical Center, followed by advanced training through the Integrative Psychiatry Institute Fellowship and specialized trauma work. Over the years, I have developed broad experience across therapy modalities, medication management, integrative approaches, and life/career coaching. I work closely with adults and aging adults navigating challenges with nutrition, sleep, stress, relationships, work, anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, PTSD, addiction, self‑esteem, academic demands, performance, and career transitions.

I believe wellness is far more than the absence of illness - it is a dynamic state of physical, emotional, and social well‑being. My approach is holistic and person - centered, integrating evidence - based treatments with a deep understanding of each individual’s unique story. I work collaboratively with patients to create tailored plans that support not just symptom relief, but meaningful, sustainable growth.

Like the art of Kintsugi, I view life's fractures not as flaws to be hidden but as meaningful parts of life's narrative. Through thoughtful integration of therapy, lifestyle, and when appropriate, medication, I work to restore balance while recognizing the resilience and beauty that emerge through healing.

I am an out - of - network provider, which means I do not bill insurance directly. I can, however, provide a “superbill” that you may submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. Working outside of insurance allows me to offer shorter wait times and longer, more thoughtful appointments. I provide care both in person and through telehealth.

"Dr. Mao changed my outlook on my life and helped me challenge myself to grow and have a healthy lifestyle. Before, I weighed close to 350lbs, and I'm 5'8". I had problems with eating bad foods since a kid and got hurt on the job too. The recovery was slow and grueling. I don't like doing meds because of my side effects and health problems. Dr. Mao was patient, gave me a lot of encouragement and strength to get to better me and move forward. I tried many other ways with years of therapy, doctors, supplements, but progress was short lived. I've been with Dr. Mao for almost a year every week and I lost about 110lbs. I see a big difference in my way of thinking and my family notice me being happier with more energy, less pain. I can move so much easier, my knees are better, I don't need surgery anymore, I can breathe! I intend to continue with Dr. Mao for awhile.
